The Huntington WV Housing Authority offers homeownership counseling for any potential homeowner. Certified housing counselors offer two separate learning tracks based on the need of the homeowner. Curriculum includes Pros and Cons of Homeownership, Affordability, Understanding Credit, Budgeting, Shopping for a Home, Getting a Mortgage Loan, Home Maintenance, Maintaining your Finances and Predatory Lending. Fees vary based on which track you choose and amount of individual counseling needed.

For families who earn up to 80% of statewide median income, The West Virginia Housing Development Fund in cooperation with US Housing & Urban Development Homeownership Voucher Program can offer housing assistance payments to first time homebuyers. Applicants are screened for eligibility based on income and credit. Housing assistance (mortgage) payments are calculated on a percentage of gross annual income, utility allowance, and mortgage due. Taxes and insurance are included monthly with payment. Certain house size limits apply. Loan is a low interest rate with fixed term.
