The Marcum Terrace playground committee is up and running full speed ahead. The committee has taken on this adventure with the Housing Authority and the Norway Avenue Church of Christ to raise money for the equipment. The play ground is very expensive and The Housing Authority will meet the committee by paying half of the cost.
As of this date, they have raised several thousand dollars to go towards the playground for the area in the 500 block of Marcum Terrace and the church has raised several thousand dollars also. They have had car washes, bake sales at different establishments, hot dog sales in the community, home interior candle sale and they had a raffle with tons of great prizes to win. On August 2 - a bake sale was held at the Barboursville Walmart. Also, the playground has been selected as one of the projects of the beautification project for Huntington by the United Way as part of the Day of Action projects. We met with the United Way during the month of July.
Those of you who need community service hours - volunteering for the United Way would be a great way to get your hours. Also, those of you who assist with time, baking, helping at car washes with the committee, will be given consent to sign off on the community service paperwork. You could have your hours in no time for the year.
The staff at Marcum Terrace wants to give this committee the praise they deserve for taking this very big project on. They have been very dedicated and determined to get the funds needed for the children of this community.
Free Lunch Program - Special thanks to the Huntington City Mission for once again sponsoring the Summer Hot Lunch Program at Marcum Terrace each day this past summer. We have had a very good turn out this year and the kids have been great.
St. John's House - This past summer St. John's House extended their program all summer long and now that school is back in session they have extended their hours to Tuesday thru - Friday after from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. They have had a great turn out at the community room and having lots of fun. The kids had a lot of fun and are served a hot meal also. This is a great environment for the kids to play, get nourishment they need and to socialize with their friends. The Housing Authority staff really appreciates St. John's Church and all their volunteers for all they do for the kids in this community.
School has started and fall is here which means it is time to start planning the Halloween party for the kids. The playground committee has volunteered to help with raising money for this party. Should you want to help with the bake sale or donate something or your time for the party - please contact the office or one of the committee members. The kids always look forward to this party and really have a good time. I will sign off on the community service should you volunteer - we will need baked goods, pizza, chips, pop and juice and people willing to help monitor and serve food at the party.
Girl Scouts is starting up at the community room every other Friday starting at 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is a great activity and learning experience for girls and teens.
REMINDER - We have been getting complaints on garbage and outside toys. Garbage day is Thursdays so make sure your area is trash free by 6:00 a.m. and that your cans are back at your apartments by Friday morning. Before you retire for the evening - please pick kids toys and bikes and place behind your apartment. The appearance and curb appeal are important to all of us.
The playground committee has raised close to $3400.00 towards the playground in the 500 block. They have really done a great job and are now assisting with the United Way in grants, etc. We are proud of you!
The staff would like to wish all of you and your families a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday.
