NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORK PROJECT
By Carolyne Brown, Nicole White
The NN Project is up and running and well into our fourth month. The NN Project is located in the JW Scott Community Center on Eighth Ave. We are open each day from 11 am - 6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm. We offer a wide variety of services from free access each day to computers, computer classes, GED tutoring, homework assistance, job training and job placement. We offer free workshops covering topics such as Microsoft EXCEL, Digital Photography, Microsoft Publisher, Use of the Internet, PowerPoint, Write Minutes with Microsoft Word, Intermediate Microsoft Word, Basic Computer Skills, Health Questions- Use The Internet!, PowerPoint (Beginner), Resume Writing and “How to Create Your Own Website”.
GED tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 - 5 pm and homework help for youth in third through twelfth grade is offered each day from 3 - 4:30 pm.
The Network offers limited one-on-one computer instruction in basic computer skills to individuals whose schedules make it inconvenient for them to attend one of the classes. For those who consider themselves clueless about using computers, come into the Center. “Clueless” is no longer an excuse - the Center will change that.
Since opening its doors in August, and beginning programs on September 17th , the Network has continued to grow in program participation and use of the Center. 75 individuals visited the Neighborhood Network Center in August and September, and 37 additional individuals used the Network for the first time in October, of which 30 were adults and 7 children.
The Afterschool Homework Help component to the Network is to date, the most successful program. Children, ages 8 through 17 are receiving daily assistance in their academics to improve their grades. An on-line program Edhelper is used to download grade appropriate worksheets to strengthen their academic skills.
Congratulations to Jodie Hurd who won the $50 Wal-Mart Gift Card. She entered the contest simply by filling out one of our NN surveys.
In October, staffers began a “goody” reward system for those children who have come regularly, behaved well and worked hard. On October 11th, fresh baked cookies and October 25th, Rice Crispy treats were served.
The Afterschool Homework Help program is an educational activity for children in the third through the twelfth grades.
It is hoped that the residents of the Fairfield West Community will come to see the J.W Scott Community Center as something other than a place for parents to send their children to play.
The NN is building educational programs to benefit the learning experiences of children, adults and older adults who are interested in broadening their horizons.
The Network seeks to encourage the participation of parents in programs designed for their children and likewise support parents in their efforts to raise their children to be responsible and respectable adults. The children who come to the Network are in a protected environment. The staff monitors all Internet activities in an effort to keep the kids safe while they travel down the “Internet Highway”.
