Cabell County Youth Empowerment Program
Kelly Plantz, Student Support Specialist

On March 4, students and staff attended the annual WIA Day at the capital. This was a really good opportunity for the students to display and speak about CCYEP and the Huntington School of Fine Woodwork. The highlight of the day was when the students were able to meet Governor Manchin and present him with a handcrafted blanket chest. For many of the students, this was their first visit to our state capitol.
We have started to implement the My Decisions program into the classroom. This program is designed to provide the students with an opportunity to apply math, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to practical every day real life problems. The end goal is for the students to become more productive citizens.
Cindy Shade, mental health counselor, continues to interview and work with CCYEP students. She has facilitated classes on Stress Management, Anxiety, and Anger Management. The students look forward to these workshops every Thursday.
On March 17, Chris Grim, WorkForceWV, visited our classroom to administer the WorkKeys test. Students were given two tests, applied math and reading for information. Many of the students performed well on this test. This test is given to the students twice during their enrollment with CCYEP. A pretest is given when students first apply or enroll and the final test is given at some point before follow-ups are completed.
On March 12 and 13, Michael Whitmore, Timothy Sutphin, Armando Garcia, and Michael Pack took the GED test at the Cabell County Career and Technical Center. We are awaiting the results of their test. Several other students anticipate being ready to register for the test in April.

Ashley Nelson continues to volunteer at CCYEP. Ashley hopes to gain office experience from our program by answering phone calls, directing lobby traffic, making copies, and faxing. We really appreciate having her help.
Throughout the next month we will be completing services with our current students and beginning to recruit for our next session. CCYEP continues to have a waiting list for enrollment. We are accepting applications and the next class is scheduled to start in late May or early June.
